Speak 4 Planet Initiative:
Ocean to Art Challenge

Harness the power of art to amplify ocean voices, drive sustainability, and inspire action

With oceans under siege from pollution and climate change, young artists take on the challenge of turning these crises into powerful art that inspires change.

The Speak 4 Planet Initiative is a global youth-focused environmental platform that empowers young people to drive environmental solutions through creativity, advocacy, and innovation. Through this initiative, we launched our first 2025 Ocean to Art Challenge, aimed at engaging youth in ocean conservation through creative expression.

This unique platform invited young artists and designers aged 15-25 to raise awareness about the urgent threats facing our oceans, including plastic pollution, climate change, and ecosystem degradation.

This challenge went beyond art—it explored the intersections of environmental health, environmental awareness, and ocean protection fostering innovative thinking, experiential learning, and advocacy for sustainable action. Participants used their creativity to inspire change and educate communities for a healthier planet.

Theme:

“Our Oceans, Our Future” – Highlight the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems while reflecting on our deep connection to the ocean.

Despite covering around 70% of the planet, ocean conservation receives disproportionately little attention and funding compared to broader environmental priorities. Only about 8% of the ocean is currently designated as marine protected areas, far short of global targets to protect 30% by 2030 UNEP Marine Protected Areas.

At the same time, an estimated 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year, a figure widely reported by the United Nations Environment Programme UNEP Marine Plastic Pollution.

This imbalance highlights a critical gap: while environmental protection is increasingly discussed globally, ocean ecosystems are central to climate regulation, biodiversity, and human survival, which till this day, remain underfunded and underprioritized. Shining visibility on ocean protection is essential, because what happens in the sea ultimately shapes the health of the entire planet, from the air we breathe to the food we eat.
